In onze reeks An evening with... praten we met een kunstenaar over zijn of haar werk. Deze avond is dat theatermaker en artistiek leider NTGent Milo Rau, die centraal staat in in het festival Brandhaarden.

‘Ich bin auch nur ein Arschloch’ *

Theatercritici omschrijven Milo Rau (1977) als ‘de meest opwindende kunstenaar van Europa’ en ‘één van de meest vrije geesten van onze tijd’. Rau legt maar al te graag de vinger op de zere plek: in zijn ‘theater van het reële’ gaat hij harde onderwerpen of maatschappelijke trauma’s niet uit de weg. Zijn voorstellingen gaan over sociale of politieke misstanden, gezien door de ogen van betrokkenen.

Rau is behalve theatermaker ook filmmaker, socioloog, schrijver en journalist. Vóór hij het theater in ging, maakte hij jarenlang reportages vanuit conflictgebieden als Noord-Irak en Syrië. In 2007 richtte hij het International Institute of Political Murder op, dat naast theatervoorstellingen, films, video’s en performances ook boeken publiceert en debatten over sociale en politieke thema’s organiseert. Vanaf september 2018 Is Rau de nieuwe directeur van NTGent.

Milo Rau (1977) is not only a theatre maker, but also a filmmaker, sociologist, writer and journalist. Before he made his entrée into theatre, he spent years reporting from conflict areas such as Northern Iraq and Syria. In 2007, he founded the International Institute of Political Murder, which, in addition to theatrical productions, films, videos and performances, also publishes books and organises debates on social and political themes. In September 2018, Rau succeeded Johan Simons as the new director of NTGent.
