Folklore and urban styles conjure up fireworks from trainers.

Just try to keep your feet still with the foot-fireworks of Marco da Silva Ferreira's dancers. Their rolling trainers drive an unconventional mix of dance styles, folklore and urban. Dance, the social art form par excellence, can be the entry point for a new sense of community: this delightful dance group proves it in C A R C A Ç A.

Frenzied footwork acts as the driving force for C A R C A Ç A, the new creation by Portuguese dancer and choreographer Marco da Silva Ferreira. Ten dancers start from the heritage of European folk dances and pair them with contemporary urban dance styles such as house, the voguing ball scene, Angolan kuduro, and hardstyle. In a fluorescent white space, a blank canvas that can be 'inscribed' with new dance to their heart's content, the dancers reveal themselves as an unconventional corps de ballet. -|-
European folk dances came into being to give expression to a community. But gradually they were standardised, with new groups considered 'inferior' being denied access. Contemporary urban dance styles are emerging precisely among groups perceived as minorities; for example, LGBTQIA+ communities or communities from former colonies. For these groups, dance is a form of expression to break with the authoritarian past.

"In this piece, I wanted to work from footwork, clubbing and contemporary street dances, and cross it with vertical body work and what they say is my heritage: European folklore." — Marco da Silva Fereira

In C A R C A Ç A, folklore and urban, past and present, are forged together into one big dance party. But with serious undertones. With this performance, Da Silva Ferreira reflects on building a new identity, a place for everyone: "What power do these very different group dances have in the dialogue between generations, between what was left behind and what was found again? That we can say: yes, we can identify with this, this represents us." -|- Marco da Silva Ferreira both danced with Hofesh Shechter, one of today's most exciting choreographers, and won the Portuguese edition of So You Think You Can Dance. With Hu(r)mano Brother, on stage in a previous edition of Julidans, he made his breakthrough as a choreographer.
