On 22 November 2022, New Scientist pays tribute to science for the tenth time. Come to this festive anniversary edition of the Gala van de Wetenschap and experience how the very best scientists give an unusual insight into their field. This year, none other than Marcel Levi will curate the evening. Levi is an internist, chairman of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and professor of medicine at the University of Amsterdam.

Speakers

We dive deep into the wonderful world of science with several inspiring speakers, including Minister Robbert Dijkgraaf, Ionica Smeets, Casper Albers and Jan Pieter van der Schaar.

Marcel Levi

Chairman NWO and Professor of Medicine at the University of Amsterdam. In addition to being an internist and professor, he has been Chairman of NWO since April 2021. This year he is curator of the Gala.

Robbert Dijkgraaff

After an impressive career as a professor of theoretical physics, he is now Minister of Education, Culture and Science.

Ionica Smeets

Professor of Science Communication at Leiden University. As a professor, journalist, writer and presenter, she closes the gap between science and society.

Casper Albers

Professor of Statistics and Data Visualisation at the University of Groningen. With his research, he makes psychological dynamic models more understandable. He also writes columns.

Lori DiVito

Professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. She studies the dynamics of collaborations between large organisations, with a focus on sustainability.

Garima Sharma

Sustainability scholar at American University, Washington D.C. Her research focuses on social entrepreneurship, sustainability and the relationship between profit and intentions.

Jan Pieter van der Schaar

Theoretical physicist at the University of Amsterdam. He works at the intersection of quantum gravity, string theory and cosmology.

Vicky Beckers

PhD candidate in Functional Adaptation at Naturalis Biodiversity Center. With her research she tries to identify environmental and genetic factors of wood formation.

Willemijn Kadijk

PhD candidate in Political Extremism at the University of Amsterdam. She studies the methods used by extremist groups in their struggle against the democratic legal order.

Jean Tillie

Professor of Political Science at the University of Amsterdam. He focuses on Diversity and Political Integration. He is also Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law.

Jan van den Berg

Performing artist. He makes theatre performances and films, in which he explores the boundary between fact and fiction in a special way.

Jim Jansen

Editor-in-Chief of New Scientist | Host of the Gala of Science 2022. Besides editor-in-chief of New Scientist, he is a welcome guest in the media. He writes columns and books.
