One night in April 2012, Ihsane Jarfi talked to four young men on the corner of a street in front of a gay club in Liège. Two weeks later, he was found dead on the outskirts of a forest. He was tortured for hours and violently murdered. The crime shook the whole city.

La Reprise, Histoir(s) du théâtre I is in Dutch, French and English with Dutch and English surtiles.

Duration: 1h45

"Stronger than a monument to the dead." - Hassan Jarfi, the father of the victim

Together with actors Sara De Bosschere, Sébastien Foucault, Johan Leysen, and Tom Adjibi, warehouse owner Fabian Leenders and dog sitter Suzy Cocco, he follows the trail of a terrible crime in search of the fatal events and emotions of the tragic experience: loss and sorrow, truth and lies, disaster and fear, cruelty and terror. Professional and non-professional actors reflect on both the highs and lows of life and take on the role of the protagonists in a brutal murder case.

This creates a manifesto for a democratic 'theatre of the real'. What is theatre? What do emotion, presence, history mean on stage? What is tragedy? Which events touch or hurt us, make us angry and drive us to artistic engagement?

This is the first part of the series Histoire(s) du théâtre: a performative study of the oldest art form known to mankind. In this first part, Rau and his team return to the fundamental problems addressed by their artistic work over the past 15 years: how do you represent violence and traumatic events on stage? It is both a search for the core of the fundamentally tragic 'human condition', and a celebration of the power of theatre.

Later in the 2018/19 season, Congolese choreographer Faustin Linyekula will continue the research.

In the press

"A clever, lively reconstruction of the evil murder of a young gay man in Liège.[...] Unexpectedly moving." - NRC Handelsblad ****

"Milo Rau shows that theatre is the place where everything is possible." - de Volkskrant *****

"A meaningful illusion, as you will see, and one we desperately need to move on to action." Theaterkrant ****

"Theatrical masterpiece. Horrifyingly good" and "Gruesome murder becomes theatrical masterpiece." - De Standaard

"Give Milo Rau a crime and he makes it into a haunting theatre. In La Reprise, he stages the horrific murder of gay man Ihsane Jarfi in Liège as a modern tragedy and an analysis of acting at the same time. Terrifyingly good." De Standaard is just as laudatory as the NRC, de Volkskrant, Theaterkrant, De Morgen, Le Monde, and many others. Because La Reprise is truly touching.

‘Een voorstelling over het wezen, de toevalligheid en de gevolgen van geweld’, schreef Ron Rijghard in het NRC over La Reprise. Histoire(s) du Théâtre (I). Vanavond hebben we het over deze unaniem lovend ontvangen, ontwapenende, maar ook ongemakkelijke voorstelling.
