Édouard Louis

Worldwide, 29-year-old French writer Édouard Louis is one of the most celebrated writers of his generation. Since his debut in 2014 with the autobiographical Way with Eddy Bellegueule, about his childhood as a homosexual in a coarse-minded, poor and homophobic working-class family in northern France, he has been an important, political voice in France. With his work, he stimulates discussions on class differences, racism and homophobia and he does not shy away from speaking out politically: he supported the 'yellow jacket' movement and fought Macron: 'My book opposes who you are and what you do.

Sign of the times

In Sign of the Times, Internationaal Theater Amsterdam and De Balie explore the great social issues of today in a unique combination of theatre and conversation. In previous editions, Femke Halsema and Thierry Baudet reflected on political identity, we talked about the anger of Catalans with Carles Puigdemont, who fled from Spain, and French writer Kamel Daoud shed his light on colonial identity. With Sign of the Times, De Balie and Internationaal Theater Amsterdam want to open up the conversation, bring groups of people together and offer space for multiple perspectives. Even, or especially, when opinions differ.

10th edition

Brandhaarden 2022

Brandhaarden is an international theatre festival that brings performances by notable theatre makers from abroad to Amsterdam. The festival offers a unique overview of one creator, house, region or theme. Previous editions have put the spotlight on directors such as Katie Mitchell, Milo Rau and the Rimini Protokoll collective, and city theatres such as Münchner Kammerspiele, Volksbühne Berlin and Peter Brook's Théâtre Bouffes du Nord. In 2020, the festival focused for the first time on one region, Southern Europe, and showed notable dance and theatre productions from Portugal, Spain, Italy and Greece.

The tenth edition of the ITA Festival, from 19 February to 3 March, focuses on the work of one of the greatest French literary sensations of the moment: Édouard Louis.

Ivo van Hove adapted Who Killed My Father, by literary sensation Édouard Louis, for the stage. Van Hove turned the very outspoken book into a monologue, especially for Hans Kesting.

Édouard Louis took the world by storm with his successful autobiographical novel The End of Eddy. Without much frills but with ample dry wit, the novel tells the life story of a homosexual boy in an extremely homophobic environment.
