‘There is no beginning, no middle, no end, no suspense, no moral, no causes, no effects.’

Slaughterhouse Five, Kurt Vonnegut's classic, is about American soldier Billy Pilgrim. At the end of World War II, he barely survives the horrific bombing of Dresden. Since that event, Billy has become 'dislodged in time'. He can step through a door in 1945, and come out sometime in 1965.

Start time 8 PM, matinee 3:30 PM
Duration tba
Location Grote Zaal
Language Dutch

In Slaughterhouse Five Billy travels from his experiences in the war to his years of marriage in America, from his highly successful dental practice to the period when he was abducted by aliens and exhibited on their planet. It is there that Billy learns that time is not a linear concept, but that past, present and future take place simultaneously.

This theatre season, Erik Whien is bringing this extraordinary story to the main hall, with actors Bram Suijker, Hannah Hoekstra en Jip van den Dool. Slaughterhouse Five is described as an anti-war book. But the epic about 22-year-old Billy is all mixed up: existential, hilarious, exciting, science fiction and philosophical. Whien has proven in recent years, with Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates and Grief is the Thing with Feathers by Max Porter, that he can bring a book to the stage in an unparalleled way.

-|-'When I first read the book a long time ago, I immediately fell for the absurdity, the humour and the existential undertone. Last year I reread the book and was touched by the comfort it gave me during the bizarre and tragic developments around us. We are surrounded by the sheer complexity of everything and the uncertainty of what the future holds. The life story of Billy Pilgrim, and his recurring mantra 'that's how it goes', is a modern Passion, almost an Eastern way of looking at life. Very valuable to me at this time.'

Édouard Louis took the world by storm with his successful autobiographical novel The End of Eddy. Without much frills but with ample dry wit, the novel tells the life story of a homosexual boy in an extremely homophobic environment.
