Fringe programme
This year, for the first time, the fringe programme will take place in our new space, The Bookshop, a multi-purpose space that will be entirely dedicated to Brandhaarden throughout the festival period. It is an intimate place where thoughts, opinions and forms may be tested and shared. A place where extremes can touch and where seemingly opposing elements can coexist. Here we offer space for dialogue, reflection and a master class in dance in which we further explore the working methods of Freitas' company.
'Space on an island is limited, the same streets are used for both carnivals and funeral processions, the places of celebration or mourning are always the same. Death was always very present, you couldn't escape it. In my childlike imagination, this opened up the possibility of different elements coexisting in the same place. Extremes meet and touch. It's a happy melancholy!'
We took this quote by Freitas about her native Cape Verde as a starting point for the fringe programme.

Podcastrecording
Op de planken (On stage) is Internationaal Theater Amsterdam's podcast in which our host, Richard Kofi, talks to creators about theatre, society, and how the two influence each other. Every month, we invite a creator and a specialist to talk about the themes that are currently on our minds. Richard Kofi will talk to Marlene Freitas about her Cape Verdean roots, the themes of her plays and the multidisciplinary nature of her work.

Masterclass Marlene Monteiro Freitas
Marlene Monteir Freitas collaborates with a diverse group of dancers and creators for her works. She also regularly appears on stage herself in her own choreographies. Through a master class, we want to introduce dance students to the working methods and physical elements of Freitas' work. To experience different techniques and movements themselves and to investigate where the boundary lies between fiction and truth. We are still in talks with the company about the date and time.
The master class will be given by 2 dancers from the company, Kyle Scheurich and Hsin-Yi Shiang. In the master class, we explore how Marlene works with her dancers. During this course, we work with rhythm/music. We explore the varieties of working with the body, faces, voices and transforming into figures and animals. The master class is intended for anyone with a dance background.

City Talks Amsterdam - Carnival of Resistance
Can celebration be a form of resistance? Find out during this special edition of CityTalks Amsterdam hosted by Geoffrey van der Ven. Together with speakers and audience, we explore connections between resistance and celebration. Inspired by themes from the work of Marlene Monteiro Freitas-human evil, oppression, and liberation-we will connect these ideas to the approaching carnival season and Amsterdam's stories.
