Internationaal Theater Amsterdam (ITA) at Leidseplein. Photographed by Enrique Meesters

The theatre in Amsterdam has a rich history with well-known writers, actors and plays that can be found in the historic building. After the old theatres burned down twice, architects A.L. van Gendt and J.L. and J.B. Springer designed a new theatre. The old classicist facades were replaced by a neo-Renaissance facade. In 1894 the current building – the Stadschouwburg van Amsterdam, now Internationaal Theater Amsterdam (ITA) – was opened on Leidseplein. -|-Theatre and dance performances, operas and events have been organised here for more than 125 years. ITA is centrally located in the capital and is one of the best-preserved, historic theatres in the Netherlands, a real icon of Amsterdam. It is the place where theatre in all its 21st-century manifestations is created and performed. It is an attraction and a modern meeting place with history.
