Rebecca Frecknall – Ibsen Artist in Residence
British star director Rebecca Frecknall joins ITA as Ibsen Artist in Residence, an initiative of the Philip Loubser Foundation. Rebecca Frecknall is a multi-Olivier Award-winning director, renowned for her work in both the United Kingdom and internationally. Her productions have been staged from London’s West End to Broadway. She is an Associate Director at the Almeida Theatre in London and, starting in 2026, at the Old Vic. In 2024, she directed Julie with the ITA Ensemble, a successful adaptation of Strindberg’s Miss Julie.
“I’m so thrilled to be appointed as the next Ibsen Artist in Residence at ITA, following in the footsteps of two directors I hugely admire, Robert Icke and Eline Arbo. It’s such a privilege to be given the opportunity to continue directing for ITA over the next years and to gain the support of the Loubser Foundation, which will further my artistic development during this time. It’s so rare for mid-career artists to receive tailored artistic development, and I’m excited to undertake further training, mentoring, and experimentation to push my work to the next level. I also look forward to continuing my working relationship with Eline Arbo, who was such a great support in delivering my first ITA production last year. It’s going to be wonderful to have a home at this incredible theatre for the next three years and to keep working with their talented ensemble of actors.” – Rebecca Frecknall
Ibsen Artist in Residence
The Ibsen Artist in Residency, established by the Philip Loubser Foundation, is granted to a mid-career director, to support their artistic development, to create new large-scale productions with the ITA Ensemble and to expand their international network. Frecknall will succeed Eline Arbo in 2025, who in turn followed Robert Icke in this prestigious role. Over the course of two seasons, she will direct two new productions at ITA.
“We are excited to continue our partnership with Internationaal Theater Amsterdam through the Ibsen Artist in Residence and International Ibsen Fellowship. We are delighted to support Rebecca Frecknall and Angelo Ormskerk, both talented directors, as they further develop their artistry and look forward to seeing their creative journeys unfold in the coming years.” – Sally Sparrow, Fellowship Director bij de Philip Loubser Foundation
