Shows
Jan Martens is a rising star in the international world of dance. The choreographer is motivated by his ability to see beauty in the incomplete human being. His dances are intense, physical, and tell a story. In this case: about the sense and nonsense of progress and about standing still as a form of rebellion.
Starting time: 8 p.m.

Any attempt will end in crushed bodies and shattered bones refers to an ominous statement made by the Chinese president Xi Jinping, and is about violent language that incites physical violence; from internet trolls on message boards to Donald Trump’s speeches. Any attempt will end in crushed bodies and shattered bones tackles this subject by engaging a different type of language: that of dance. The performance examines the moments when an individual or a group goes against the current, stands still, or pushes the boundaries. An ode to civil disobedience, to rebelling and stepping out of line, to resisting the march of progress. What happens if you decide to no longer follow the crowd?
-|-After his 2018 A small guide on how to treat your lifetime companion, which takes a look at relationships, Martens is back with a large group of dancers. New dancers, but also some familiar faces, such as the 68-year-old Truus Bronkhorst, Tim Persent and Ty Boomershine. They form, in Martens’ words, a society in miniature.
Any attempt will end in crushed bodies and shattered bones goes from brutal to shamelessly romantic and everything in between. The soundtrack is just as expansive, and incorporates a broad range of pop songs and protest songs from diverse periods in history.
