Radical Space: Ancestor Work #1
Movement artist and spiritual worker Desta Deekman presents her artistic research into the intersection of dance, spirituality and dramaturgy. Drawing on the Winti tradition and West African dance practices, she explores what happens when the primary audience is not the people in the auditorium, but the ancestors in the spirit world. How does dramaturgy change when rituals are performed not for us, but with them? And how do you use dance to create an encounter between the audience and the spirit world that everyone can actually experience?
In her lecture performance, Deekman shares how these perspectives shed new light on contemporary art and how dance can once again become a ritual of connection and healing.

Radical Space in The Bookshop
With the arrival of The Bookshop, ITA introduces Radical Space: an initiative that reclaims theatre as a place for solidarity, empathy and artistic innovation. In this space on Leidseplein, we will give a stage to diverse voices and perspectives, exploring the complex legacy of (our) theatre and its social impact.
Following successful programmes such as Keti Koti and City Talks, Radical Space focuses on pressing social issues such as colonialism, class inequality, sexism and transphobia. Here, together with artists, makers and thinkers, we develop interdisciplinary projects that provide space for critical artistic commentary.
