Through the eyes of Marlene
In Lulu, Freitas follows the rise and fall of a woman who was portrayed as both a seductive femme fatale and a vulnerable femme fragile. Lulu's life was defined by the desires and projections of her lovers and husbands, until she was eventually murdered by Jack the Ripper. Freitas emphasises in her direction both the question of whether Lulu was a victim of male oppression and bourgeois hypocrisy, and the possibility that she herself represented an unstoppable force of seduction and destruction.
Together with French conductor Maxime Pascal, known for his passion for modern music, Freitas opted for an open-ended interpretation of the unfinished third act.
