Swan Lakes
Shows
“The legend is back with a twist. The world's favourite ballet is still a crowd favourite.”
As soon as the title of this ultimate classical ballet is mentioned, images and associations automatically come to mind: a lake in the moonlight, the dance of the little swans, the prince torn between his love for the White and the Black Swan and the temptations of the Black Swan, and the evil wizard who manipulates everything and everyone. Countless traditional versions and modern interpretations and parodies of Swan Lake have been produced, both on stage and on the silver screen. Does that mean that there is nothing more to say about Swan Lake? Certainly not!

With Artist Talk with Eric Gauthier on 9 February (language: English)
Ballet of ballets
Eric Gauthier, artistic director of Gauthier Dance/Dance Company Theaterhaus Stuttgart, asked four top contemporary choreographers to give their vision on the “ballet of ballets”. The four creations – by Marie Chouinard, Marco Goecke, Hofesh Shechter and Cayetano Soto – are not intended as a full-length work, but as “Swan Lakes in the plural”: four separate, stylistically completely different choreographies by four producers who, starting from a well-known story, each give a completely new meaning and interpretation to Swan Lake.
Preceding the performance on 9 February
Artist talk: Eric Gauthier
In this edition of our new Artist Talks programme, our moderator Carolien Borgers, together with the audience, talks to renowned dancer and choreographer Eric Gauthier. Sitting in the salon, with a drink in hand, we will discuss his oeuvre, working methods, fascinations and wishes for the future and reflect together on the theatre landscape and the role Gauthier plays.
The Artist Talk is free of charge. However, you must register in advance.
Sensual experience
Canadian avant-garde choreographer Marie Chouinard, for decades celebrated internationally, immerses the audience in a sensual experience, fusing dance, electronic music – a reworking of Tchaikovsky's famous ballet music – and video projections. For the dark, extremely physical contribution of the politically engaged Israeli hit choreographer Hofesh Shechter, the desires, fantasies and dreams of all those who have no home, no place and no choice are an important starting point.
Swan Lakes is a powerful interpretation of Tchaikovsky's masterpiece and a passionate and contemporary Swan Lake for our time.
-|-Magical Transformation
In his contribution to Swan Lakes, Spaniard Cayetano Soto – known for his flamboyant choreographies – makes visible the magical moment of the transformation from human to animal, from woman to swan. Swan Lake has been a source of inspiration for artist in residence Marco Goecke for some time: he previously created a sublime contemporary version of the famous Black Swan pas de deux. In his new creation, with a group of male dancers, he explores “what the ballet dream of the ultimate classical ballet could look like today”.
This production is a co-presentation of Holland Dance Festival and Internationaal Theater Amsterdam.
