Tolon Ké!

Tolon
Ké! is derived from Dioula (Jula), a Mande language widely spoken in West Africa, especially in Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire and Mali. The expression refers to a sentiment akin to ‘let us rejoice’ and is a call to experience a moment of pure joy.

Julidans takes this energetic dance concert outdoors, to the open-air stage of the Vondelpark Openluchttheater. Four dancers, accompanied by a vocalist/guitarist, take the audience on an exuberant celebration – not merely as spectators, but to participate, to feel and to embrace the rhythm. This creates a bond and joy – a bright spot as an antidote to a sombre world.

In recent years, the Faso Danse Théâtre from Burkina Faso has increasingly interwoven the rhythm of the human heart into its choreographies. Choreographer Serge Aimé Coulibaly, who has previously worked with prominent personalities such as Alain Platel and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, is working with his dancers to explore how this pulsating rhythm – the basis of life, a constant pulse that connects us to the world – in conjunction with an actively engaged audience, can create an even more intense dance experience.

Faso Danse Théâtre is known for its dynamic approach to African dance, in which the rich traditions of Burkina Faso in particular merge with contemporary dance and social themes. The choreographies, steeped in social and political issues, explore human motivations, identity and the complexity of the modern world.
