Nelson Mandela Lecture
35 years after Nelson Mandela's release in February 1990, ZAM provides an event where people from all walks of life can meet. Our search for the meaning of Mandela's practices and vision in the here and now, is more significant than ever, due to current, often very worrying developments in the world today. With this programme, ZAM Magazine makes a stand against discrimination and hate speech, war crimes and oppression and a manifestation of solidarity!
John-Allan Namu (b. 1983) heads Africa Uncensored in Nairobi. Founded in 2015, this media platform has uncovered numerous scandals of abuse of power and self-enrichment by the Kenyan authorities during its 10 years of existence. Namu has received numerous awards for his important and often dangerous work.

The main programme will be opened by the mayor of Amsterdam Femke Halsema and presented by Ikenna Azuike. As in previous years, the lecture will be embedded in a cultural programme. Amsterdam band Fra Fra Sound performs with South African jazz giant Mthunzi Mvubu, with a powerful performance of Hugh Masekela's protest song Stimela. Via video, Adriaan van Dis will deliver a reading of Ghayath Almadhoun's impressive Ode to Sorrow. Prior to this, there are two public talks in the Koninklijke Foyer, and on Gijsbrechtbordes there is a meeting place featuring books, art and food. Also on display is the photo exhibition Strength and Resilience in the Western Cape by South African photographer Gulshan Khan.
