The Bookshop is the smallest stage at Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam. A soft-pink cultural living room curated by ITA's programmers. The Bookshop is a place to settle in for a new story, a conversation or a different perspective.
Walk across the Leidseplein and before you know it you are standing at the glass doors of The Bookshop. On one side the bustle of the city, on the other a warm, intimate space you can simply step into. Welcome to The Bookshop: small in size, big in ambition, and open to anyone who is curious.
The Bookshop has a small stage, lighting and sound, so the space can be used in all sorts of ways. One evening a lecture or debate, the next an intimate show, a book discussion, live music or an exhibition.
It is no coincidence that The Bookshop occupies this particular spot in the building. This was once the entrance for the poorer people of Amsterdam, who were led up separate staircases to the cheapest seats in the highest balconies, kept apart from the wealthy visitors. That charged past is still present in the architecture of the building. Which is precisely why this is the place to question that history. And to make room for makers, performers and voices that might otherwise go unheard.
