HISTORY
The Bookshop was once the balcony entrance to the amphitheatre, intended for the ‘common people’ who paid less for a ticket. This entrance was separate from the main and side entrances, which were reserved for wealthy Amsterdammers, directors, mayors and nobility. Later on, the space served as a bookshop for a long time. Since 2024, it bears the name The Bookshop and has become the new cultural living room on Leidseplein. This small-scale stage offers space for experimentation, reflection and new perspectives. The Bookshop is a place for everyone, with a strong focus on accessibility and openness, a gift to the city in honour of Amsterdam 750.
