Medhi Walerski & Crystal Pite

Walerski will create a new work with two dancers for the programme Endlessly Free. Besides this world premiere NDT 1 will stage his SOON (2017). SOON started off with a piece of music that was of great significance to the choreographer: “A few years ago I went to a Benjamin Clementine concert. From that moment on, I knew I wanted to create a piece to his music”, Walerski says. “The sheer uniqueness of his voice and the raw, profound poetry of his lyrics kindled a spark that I wanted to express through this piece; four songs, four dancers, echoing Clementine’s vision of life.”

The triple bill is completed with Crystal Pite’s The Other You (2010), a duet she created for her company Kidd Pivot. The work is a portrait of a man in dialogue with ‘his other’ and lives in the tension between contrasting states.

Press about SOON

"Clementine's honest sound has similarities to the pure dance language, giving the sensitive texts extra eloquence." - Leidsch Dagblad about SOON

"SOON is more than a dialogue between dance and music. It is the sound that sets the quartet in motion, makes the dancer's bodies wave and thus seems to make subcutaneous emotions tangible". - Leidsch Dagblad about SOON

"The two women and two men in shirtless men's suits move comfortably with the bluesy sounds of the British singer-songwriter. Too comfortable. The choreography, like the whole programme, is performed flawlessly, but adds little to the music and tends towards the decorative". - The Parool *** about SOON

"[Walerski] knows better than anyone how to playfully grow dancers into the light." - de Volkskrant **** about SOON

"Four dancers are propelled by a rotating satellite. They're chased by it but also challenged to seek each other out." - Trouw to SOON
