étude des hommes - Patricia van Deutekom / LAVA Collective

Patricia van Deutekom's duet étude des hommes explores the concept of 'masculinity' from a female point of view and body language. This duet, centred on two female dancers, dissects the different meanings of 'homme', ranging from man, human, guy, fellow, male person, humanity, perpetrator to dead person.

The duet étude des hommes, created during a residency at HUIS Conny Janssen Danst, is a powerful physical and emotional dialogue between two women in dance.

The dancers of LAVA Collective, Patricia van Deutekom's company, dive deep into the codes of behaviour and manners associated with masculinity. They challenge each other, gently explore each other, and steadily build towards a sense of fraternity and brotherhood, rapprochement and mutual understanding. What insights does this offer about the human experience?

Patricia van Deutekom's work is a physical and emotional showdown in dance. She has a recognisable dance language full of compressed anger and raw motor skills. All human emotions pass by, while she is constantly looking for a balance between extremes.

TARANTO ALEATORIO - Maria del Mar Suárez

Two women eat sunflower seeds in a park, a doorway and a courtyard. They share a common space, a conversation, the intimacy of silence. The cante (singing) and baile (dancing) suddenly burst forth, transforming the mundane scene into a magic intimate spectacle.

A Taranto is a palo (form) of flamenco originally from the mining area of Almería. It’s a primitive song, simple, dry, without guitar, which was born from the need to sing independently. In TARANTO ALEATORIO (Random Taranto), choreographer and dancer María del Mar Suárez/LaChachi and singer Lola Dolores embark on their personal take of this palo’s stark rawness. By taking a random approach, the dancer and singer embrace irreverent gestures and humour emerges.

La Chachi has earned her place in the tradition of breaking down and reassessing flamenco, following the path of other outsiders like El Niño de Elche, Israel Galván and Rocío Molina. An actress and dancer, she graduated in both disciplines in Malaga, her hometown. After specialising in flamenco with “La Lupi”, training in physical theatre, new dramaturgy and contemporary dance, she discovered her true passion: the union of all these disciplines.
