Op reis door een nieuwe wereld

In Op reis door een nieuwe wereld, the new geopolitical reality is given a human face. Drawing from encounters filmed for their VPRO series, Terlou and Brandt Corstius tell the broader story. They offer a behind-the-scenes look at their lives as documentary makers—sharing powerful moments and extraordinary events. What drives them to keep traveling, again and again?

-|-
We travel along the contours of a new world order—one where U.S. hegemony has faded, and the resulting vacuum is being filled by China and Russia. Where democracies are giving way to autocracies. Where smaller nations like Taiwan and Ukraine are under threat. And where Europe must find a new path forward.

About Ruben Terlou

Documentary filmmaker and photographer Ruben Terlou (born 1985) studied Mandarin in China and Medicine in Amsterdam. In 2014, he chose to leave a future in medicine behind and pursue a career in journalism. His photography has earned him several Silver Camera awards and the Prize for Innovative Photojournalism. He has made various documentary series about China, one of which was nominated for the prestigious Zilveren Nipkowschijf. Together with Jelle Brandt Corstius, he traveled through Central Asia and brought compelling stories to life in Along the New Silk Road. In his series Doctor Ruben, he combined his medical background with his documentary work, viewing the world through the lens of a physician.
