Ramses Shaffy Walk

Singing, fighting, crying, praying, laughing, working and marvelling. Singer, actor and painter Ramses Shaffy (1933–2009) did it all. And he loved doing it in Amsterdam. He captured it all in his songs, in which streets, canals and squares form the backdrop.

In 2014, cabaret expert Daan Bartels compiled a list of all the Amsterdam homes and workplaces of this master of the art of living and became the guide for the highly successful Ramses Shaffy walks. Over the course of ten years, more than five thousand fans, theatre and music lovers have joined him on these walks.

With this guide in hand, you can now discover Ramses Shaffy’s Amsterdam for yourself. His history comes to life through stories and music. The walking route is around fifteen kilometres long, takes in sixty locations across the city and can, of course, also be completed in stages.-|-
Places on this walking tour are limited to 15 people, so be quick!

In good weather, Daan Bartels will take you to special spots on Leidseplein that played a key role in Shaffy’s life and artistic expression.

In bad weather, the tour will switch to a guided tour inside ITA itself, with a special focus on Shaffy’s past with us. What traces did he leave behind?

About Daan Bartels

As a lover and connoisseur of Dutch-language songs, I began writing reviews and articles for my own website, hetlied.nl, around the year 2000. At the same time, I managed the news section on Liesbeth List’s website. From 2007 to 2012, I worked at VARA as the compiler of the Radio 2 programmes Het Circus Jeroen Bosch and Sara op Zondag. In the years that followed, I wrote two collections of interviews on the art of song, served as guest programmer for Dutch-language songs at the Concertgebouw and Diligentia Theatre, and spoke on this subject several times on television on Tijd voor MAX. I have written various song lyrics for Sjors van der Panne, Remco, Daan & Maurice, and for my own enjoyment. For ten years, I also led city walks in Amsterdam centred on the life stories of icons such as Annie M.G. Schmidt, Rob de Nijs, Wim Sonneveld, Liesbeth List and Ramses Shaffy. The walks about Ramses Shaffy and Liesbeth List have been published in book form. I am currently working on translations of the songs by the South African singer Laurika Rauch – a project that deepens my love for language and song even further.
