Genre Perspective
The State of the World
Bread and Roses paints a powerful picture of the struggles of three women in Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power in 2021. It is a raw, intimate portrayal of their harrowing situation in which you see the impact of losing basic rights. Hollywood star Jennifer Lawrence, producer of Bread and Roses, says: "You don't see this side of the story, women fighting back, in the news every day and it's an important part of our film, and the stories of these women."

Sahra Mani on the State of the World: "A huge problem is the lack of news in the Western media about the Afghan people under Taliban dictatorship and especially about the women's situation. I would love doing this programme and we can hopefully bring Afghanistan back into the eyes of the public and policy makers."
Last year, The State of the World interviewed Pussy Riot leader and activist Maria Alyokhina. This programme is held in English.
The State of the World is organised in cooperation with De Balie.
NEDERLANDS THEATER FESTIVAL
For 11 days - from 7 to 17 September 2023 - the Nederlands Theater Festival will present this season's finest performances. The festival also showcases successful new developments in theatre, is at the forefront of the conversation about the role of theatre in society and blurs boundaries between different art disciplines. Traditionally, the festival opens with the Staat van het Theater and closes with the Gala van het Nederlands Theater, where the most important theatre awards are presented.
The Nederlands Theater Festival is there to celebrate theatre and audiences.
