Theatercollege Barbara Baarsma - De economische stand van het land
Poes money bring happiness? The most determining factor for happiness is not money or income, but the feeling of having control over your life. Research has shown that the extent to which someone feels they have control over their life is seven and a half times more important for their well-being than income. Access to good education, job security, healthcare, and the housing market all determine the degree to which someone has control over their life. Barbara Baarsma calls this "opportunity power."
Barbara Baarsma is an economist. She is a professor of applied economics at the University of Amsterdam and chief economist at PwC. She is also a member of the Dutch Committee for Entrepreneurship (including with Her Majesty Queen Máxima) and chair of the Bank Council of De Nederlandsche Bank. Previously, she worked at Rabobank, was a crown member of the Social and Economic Council (SER), and held supervisory roles in the financial and other sectors. A central theme in her research is sustainability.
In recent years, she has written the books Nederland Voedselparadijs (2020), in which she calls for more production and consumption through short supply chains, Groene Groei (2022) about the (in)sensibility of economic growth, and Duurzame Financiering (2024) about how the financial sector can drive the greening of the economy.

Barbara Baarsma was one of the first female economists to tell economic stories on television. She shared her candid opinion on the women’s quota on Pauw & Witteman and offered economic commentary during the financial crisis, on the national budget, and on the economic effects of election programs in other talk shows.
She sees it as her task as an economist to provide economic insights and facts so that better-founded and, thus, better decisions can be made. Better decisions that aim to achieve the greatest possible prosperity and well-being for as many people as possible, both now and in the future.
In this theater lecture, Barbara Baarsma provides an overview of the country's economic situation. A key indicator is economic growth. She presents facts and economic insights and encourages you to reflect on how the economy should proceed. She will bring you completely up to date on the economy.
After the theater lecture, there will be a Meet & Greet with Barbara.
