The Tula Herdenkingsconcert 2023 will pay tribute to the Curaçao resistance fighter Tula, who in 1795 led the largest uprising of enslaved people on Curaçao in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. The courage and determination Tula showed during this resistance contributed unmistakably to the emancipation drive of enslaved people on Curaçao and the surrounding islands.

Tula Herdenkingsconcert
This year, percussion virtuoso Roël Calister curates het Tula Herdenkingsconcert. As a musician, Calister is partly inspired by a memory from his own childhood; during a brawl in the 1990s at his high school, he witnessed a fight in which the name Tula was shouted. It was meant as an insult and humiliation. After doing more research on this history, awareness and consciousness grew. Tula gained a deeper meaning for Roël. Tula stands for strength, resistance, courage and perseverance. In this personal journey towards greater awareness, Tula transformed for Roël from an ugly swear word to a national hero. This theme will be musically explored by Roël at het Tula Herdenkingsconcert.
The concert will focus on Afro-Curaçao music traditions, and a unique mix of genres will pass by, from rousing rhythms to moving melodies. It promises to be an evening where music and emotion come together, honouring the past and celebrating the future. There will be guest performances by resounding names as top vocalist Izaline Calister, poet and writer Gershwin Bonevacia, and dancer and choreographer Faizah Grootens.
