On August 17, 1795, Tula, along with dozens of others, rose up against slavery in Curaçao. It was the largest uprising of enslaved people in the Dutch Caribbean. His struggle became a powerful symbol of resistance and freedom – not only for the people of the island, but for the entire Afro-Caribbean community and beyond.

A musical tribute to freedom, resistance, and remembrance.

The Slavery Remembrance Committee and the National Institute for the Dutch Slavery Past and Heritage (NiNsee) have appointed none other than multi-talented vocal powerhouse Clifton End as this year’s curator of the Tula Commemoration Concert. In an evening filled with music and storytelling, he offers a unique interpretation and tribute to Tula, and to all those who spoke out against injustice and fought for freedom and self-determination.
