Toneelmakerij / Sadettin K. / Paul Knieriem

We know the stories of One Thousand and One Nights mainly from the fairy-tale Disney films such as Aladdin, Sinbad and Ali Baba and the Forty Robbers. De Toneelmakerij and master storyteller Sadettin Kırmızıyüz use these age-old tales as inspiration for the new musical family performance 1000+1 nacht. Let yourself be enchanted by the power of stories. For everyone aged eight and up!

Layla is in hospital. She sleeps, very deeply. Father Ersin sits by her bedside day and night and tells her the stories from One Thousand and One Nights. Everyone in the hospital listens in, from the head doctor to the cleaner. In Layla's imagination, the stories come to life. Tough warriors move to the rhythm of the heart rate monitor, djinns emerge from an IV drip. While doctors busily dance around her bedside, Layla and her father fly over deserts, float past uninhabited islands and wander through fairytale cities. The hospital and the fantasy world increasingly intertwine. What is certain: without the doctors' expertise, Layla will not get better, but she has equal need for her father's loving stories.

Sadettin Kırmızıyüz: "I am immensely looking forward to this performance, because it is a rich addition to the stories my children already know. Besides Little Red Riding Hood now Sinbad, besides Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs now Ali Baba and the Forty Robbers. Our country, but also our family, is a mishmash of cultures and stories and with this performance I am happy to contribute to that."

The 1000+1 Nacht Experience

In the 1000+1 Night Experience, children are challenged to think about and experience the power of stories! Using the 1000+1 Night walking map as a guide, they first write their own story, and then work it out: by making a costume, telling the story in a podcast, or making a book cover for the book their story is in. At the end, children receive a gift to take home.

The Experience is free to visit from 1.5 hours before up to 1 hour after the performance and starts in the ITA Salon.

Paul Knieriem about 1000+1 nacht

"Every parent knows how important it is to read to their child in the evening. Not because it is important, or good for parenting, but because it is such a nice intimate moment you share together. I hope this performance has the same intimacy as telling a nice story just before bedtime."

Parent and child workshop

Prior to the performances on 27 - 30 December, you can take part in a special workshop. In this workshop for children and their parents/carers, a small event becomes a big story. Awaken the storyteller in yourself and join in, and you will never have NOTHING to say again.

When ordering ticket(s) for the performance, you can register for the workshop. Entrance to the workshop is free.
