About De vreemdeling
De Vreemdeling is a reconstruction of this road trip through the Sahara. A story about the friendship between an Algerian and a Dutchman. But also about Europe’s colonial history and the lost innocence of the European migration policy, which – far away, in the Sahel – is crossing its own limits.
-|-For 22 years, the Algerian Karim Ramtani lived in Amsterdam illegally. He inspired artist Michiel Voet to make a photographic exhibition and a theatre production at Orkater, under the name De Onzichtbare Man. It played at festivals and in theatres at home and abroad from 2014 to 2018. Three years ago, Karim Ramtani returned to Algeria, disillusioned. The illegal life in Europe had offered him no prospects.
