Opening Lieve Stad,
Ghamte en Guillaume Schmidt / Priscilla Vaudelle

The opening of Lieve Stad, 2024 is curated by brothers Guillaume and Ghamte Schmidt. Starting from the theme of this edition of the festival, the mental state of the city, they select makers and performers whose work artistically comments on the relationship between the individual and the changing city of Amsterdam. Expect contributions from poets, performers and musicians like Djuwa Mroivili. Also part of the programme is the performance OSSO by Amsterdam playwright Priscilla Vaudelle. We will end the evening with a party.

A Kabá

The opening of Lieve Stad, 2024 is curated by brothers Guillaume and Ghamte Schmidt. Guillaume is one of the founders of Amsterdam streetwear brand Patta and Ghamte is part of Famirie. Starting from the theme of this edition of the festival, the mental state of the city, they select makers and performers whose work artistically comments on the relationship between the individual and the changing city of Amsterdam.

Jennifer Muntslag

Jennifer is a presenter and born performer who blows through the room like a breath of fresh air, full of enthusiasm and humour. Her jobs range from a weekly late-night talk show at Pakhuis de Zwijger, annual host during Oerol, Amsterdam Roots Festival, Kunstbende, vlogging for Shot of Culture and various Spoken Word events to club nights at the Paradiso, Melkweg and many clubs/festivals at home and abroad.

Djuwa Mroivili

Djuwa Mroivili (Amsterdam, 1998) is a Comorean-Dutch maker, pianist, curator, researcher, and fangirl based in Amsterdam. Although trained as a classical pianist, and concerts (both solo and in collaboration with others) are still part of her working practice, she also experiments with other formats of performance in which music plays a role. In the performances she develops as a maker - often conceptual in nature - she poses as a vulnerable storyteller, using music, words and body, among other things, to tell her stories. As a researcher, Mroivili researched Black composers in the history of classical music, and she also regularly performs their works.

Juan Wells

Juan Wells, during the opening of Lieve Stad, plays a number of scenes from Queen of Disco by RIGHTABOUTNOW INC. Queen of Disco is a musical theatre performance about the irresistible rise, tragic fall and irrepressible rebirth of 'disco music', epitomised by the life of disco icon and flamboyant LGBTQ activist SYLVESTER.

Multi-talented Juan Wells is a jack of all trades. As an actor, he works in theatre, on the small and big screen. Audiences were introduced to him in his role of Bento do Carmo in the popular soap opera Onderweg Naar Morgen. During his soap adventure, Juan threw himself into his music career. With the duo Fluitsma and Van Tijn, Juan scored a big hit with the song Summer Rain. The passion for acting remained and Juan acted together with Marnix Kappers and Dominique van Vliet, among others, in the family musical Sleeping Beauty. In Opera aan het IJ's satirical musical theatre production The beastly bombing, Juan played the role of Jesus, for which he received rave reviews. Juan also starred in the brilliant La Cage Aux Folles alongside Stanley Burleson and Jon van Eerd. In this, Juan played the role of Jacob the butler. In the dazzling Disney musical Little Mermaid, Juan played the role of Sebastian the crab. He is currently starring in Boni the Musical.

NOELL3

NOELL3 has emerged as one of the leading female talents in the Dutch hip-hop scene in the past year. The female rapper grew up in Amsterdam's Bijlmer and scored high with her 101Barz session, FunX Talent participation and musical collaborations with Cho and Reanny, among others. On stage, NOELL3 excels with a dazzling show full of dance and choreography, which was visible at several prominent festivals last summer. As an artist, NOELL3 wants to be an inspiration for other women who would like to enter the music industry. With her catchy flows and catchy lyrics, this rising star aspires to make the daily lives of other ambitious young adults more colourful.

Ondrofeni

As a surprise, this is how the Kaskawi band Ondrofeni was formed in October 1993. With an unexpected performance, six boys made a huge party with some sticks and boxes. These have since been exchanged for 'real' instruments and the group expanded from six to 15 men. The boys who formed the group were around 12-15 at the time and had to experience for themselves what it is like to turn a band around with no money and other resources. Hence the apt name Ondrofeni which freely translated means experience. They have already played at Oerol, the Uitmarkt, Antillean festivals, Kwaku Festival, Welcome to the village, countless parties and even the North Sea Jazz Festival!

Kaskawi (Kaseko-Kawina) music from Suriname is Surinamese modern swinging percussion music where you definitely cannot stand still!

OSSO

Maggie and Steven have been separated for a year. They have two children together: Stef (18) and Michael (16). Together, they are trying to shape their family life in a new way. But how do you live your life as a family the moment you break up? With music by singer-songwriter Zoë Livay and musical coaching by Glen Faria.

Son Michael (Erwin Kiene) has locked himself in his room. Right on the day his sister Stef (Zoë Livay) has her first solo performance. No one knows why he won't open his door and in a panic, Maggie (Samantha Cherish Wielkens) asks Steven (Ayrton Kirchner) to come over. She told him last night that she has accepted a big assignment abroad, saying that the children will have to live with him for the time being. She has put her own house up for rent and tomorrow morning tenants are coming for a viewing. But this will require Michael to come out of his room.

Through sharp dialogues, vulnerable songs and fiery movements, the structures within the family are exposed. A moving, funny and confrontational family portrait, in which the focus is not the solution but the attempt.

FESTIVAL LIEVE STAD,

Amsterdam is a city of many faces. Lieve Stad, – a celebration of theatre, art, and dialogue – reflects the dynamics of that metropolitan environment, in which the city itself is a source of inspiration. This festival, a collaboration between ITA and Meervaart, is about bringing people together, in the city, in the theatre, in society. How do we live together and what stories do all individuals and groups carry with them?
