LFMC presents: Toys Are Us
Toys Are Us is the latest art project by the artist collective LFMC, in which historical figures from our past are positioned as either superheroes or supervillains.
Stories about superheroes and supervillains have had a profound impact on humanity across cultures and centuries. We can’t seem to get enough of them. But why is that? Is it because we continually long for something greater than ourselves? Do we seek examples of (semi-)human greatness in order to keep believing in a better version of humanity? Or do these stories and characters help us recognize evil more clearly? Whatever the reason, sometimes we simply need fantastic stories to better understand this complex world.
With Toys Are Us, LFMC steps into a long tradition of storytellers by presenting four “heroes and villains” from the Dutch colonial past in a multidisciplinary installation. -|-
Each historical figure is presented as an action figure, complete with a personal origin story, individually designed packaging, and accompanying video works. In this way, LFMC packages Dutch history as a piece of pop culture. Toys Are Us is history in a new visual language, told by the descendants of colonial history.
