Lieve Stad, 2024
The mental state of the city
20 - 30 March
Amsterdam is a city of many faces. Lieve Stad, – a celebration of theatre, art, and dialogue – reflects the dynamics of that metropolitan environment, in which the city itself is a source of inspiration. This festival, a collaboration between ITA and Meervaart, is about bringing people together, in the city, in the theatre, in society. How do we live together and what stories do all individuals and groups carry with them?

On 20, 23, 27, 28 and 29 March in ITA
Lieve Stad, photo studio
Who exactly are these Amsterdammers? Lieve Stad, invites Amsterdammers to have their portrait taken in one of our photo studio. On days performances are scheduled, you can have yourself immortalised in both ITA and Meervaart. These portraits will be projected on both locations during the festival.
20 - 30 March, ITA and Meervaart
Brieven aan de stad (Letters to the city)
For the exhibition Brieven aan de stad, we asked Patta, Verdedig Noord and House of Vineyard to write a letter to Amsterdam. The central question is "How do you feel in the city?", challenging the writers to give an insight into their mental state in relation to the city.
The letters will be exhibited at ITA and Meervaart. Visitors can write back a letter at ITA.
20 - 30 March (with the exception of 25 and 26 March), ITA Gijsbrechtbordes
Meditation room
During Lieve Stad, our mental state and health is the focus. Unwind and take a moment to let your thoughts flow and ground into your body in our meditation room on the Gijsbrechtbordes. From 6 pm until right before the performance, we invite you to take a moment for yourself and enter the performance in peace.
28 March, Meervaart
Living Library
At the Living Library, you don't read books, but people. Interesting people, whom you don't talk to easily in everyday life. Does what we think about people based on the outside match reality? A refugee, a transgender person, an ex-con, a homeless person and a teenage mother are ready to tell you their life stories. In an open conversation where everything can be asked and discussed.
The Living Library is a tried-and-tested concept of Danish origin that brings people together to explore and counter prejudices. Just like in an ordinary library where books give access to unknown worlds, the Living Library also allows visitors to step into someone else's world of experience. In a very simple way: by openly talking to each other.
20 – 30 March, Meervaart
Exposition 50 years of hiphop by Maam
50 years ago, hip-hop emerged as a cultural movement in the South Bronx, New York City. In 50 years, hip-hop has become one of the biggest music genres in the world. All over the world, hip-hop's 50th anniversary is being celebrated. This exhibition by Marco van Bijsteren (Maam) is a tribute to some of our musical hip-hop heroes.
