In A suit of dances - A day in the studio, Noé Soulier brings Noa Eshkol’s revolutionary movement system back to life – in the bodies of today.

Noa Eshkol believed that dance need not illustrate anything: no story, no music, just bodies entering into relationships in space. In the 1950s, together with architect Avraham Wachman, she developed a system for notating movement. Using symbols, numbers and geometric structures, she mapped the body as a moving whole in space and time.

A suit of dances - A day in the studio

In A suit of dances, Soulier engages in a dialogue with these ideas. The vision he creates on the stage is not a reconstruction, but a living response: a choreography born from the encounter between Eshkol’s system and the bodies of today.

These bodies belong to the Dance On Ensemble from Berlin, a company of dancers aged forty and over. Their work explores how movement changes over time — how it is remembered, carried and reactivated.

-|-The performance is part of a series in which choreographers respond to key figures from dance history. Previously, Mathilde Monnier and Tim Etchells engaged in dialogue with Merce Cunningham and Martha Graham respectively. This creates a continuous thread in which tradition and innovation continue to question one another.

Noé Soulier

Noé Soulier is a French choreographer and thinker who approaches dance as a means of exploring movement and meaning. His work moves between choreography, theory and the visual arts and is presented internationally at festivals, in theatres and museums. He has received several major awards, including the Danse Élargie Prize (2010), the title of Choreographic Personality of the Year (2024) and the SACD Prize for Choreography (2025). He has also created work for, among others, the Nederlands Dans Theater.
