Self-examination of a family cast adrift.
Sweden, June 1986. A year after the death of their father, three grown-up sisters come together in the family house by the sea. Here, they want to celebrate midsummer evening with their mother, partners and an impromptu guest, Axel. The two eldest sisters, Anna and Lena, have flourishing careers in business and the arts, as do their partners. The life of the youngest sister Britt-Marie, who lives in a psychiatric institution and wants to be called Hebriana, seems to stand still. But are Anna and Lena happy? As time goes on, Hebriana starts to take centre stage. Does she, as an outsider living in her own dream world, hold the key to the answer to the question: how to live?

In Hebriana, a summer family reunion turns into a self-examination of a family cast adrift. There is a lot to be settled in this family and that will happen tonight. The characters can sometimes come across as harsh, but that often makes them laughably recognisable. As now, the family faces a world that has been shaken politically and ecologically: 1986 was the year of the Chernobyl disaster and the shocking political assassination of Prime Minister Olaf Palme. In a masterly way, writer Lars Norén shows how this family – just like we do often – wants to take responsibility for a world adrift and at the same time tries very hard to forget it.
