Yerma
Driven to the unthinkable by the ardent desire to have a child
Yerma has been married to Juan for two years, but her greatest wish has still not been fulfilled: a child. The years pass, but Yerma remains childless. Her wish to have children slowly seems to become an obsession. Does she want a child because she wants to be a mother? Or because it is expected of her as a woman? Her relationship with Juan comes under increasing strain, until she finally takes dramatic action.

Thirty-somethings dilemma
Director Eline Arbo is almost 35 years old herself and recognises Yerma's dilemma. Do you want to become a mother as a young woman and if so, why? And how simple is it, for example, what happens if one of the partners wants children, but the other does not? To what extent are you influenced by your environment? And where in Lorca's time motherhood provided a form of freedom, now it often seems more like a curtailment of freedoms. Arbo turns Yerma into an idiosyncratic performance based on the 1934 play by the Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca. Musical and poetic, with Flamenco influences. Arbo previously directed the acclaimed performances Werther and Weg met Eddy Bellegueule.
