The rise of a monster
Richard wants absolute power. A master manipulator, he bends everyone to his will. Through lies, intrigue and murder, he ruthlessly eliminates anyone who stands in his way. Driven by a deep sense of humiliation and exclusion, he plots his revenge.
With charm and eloquence, he deceives both the public and his own family. But those who sacrifice everything to seize power will always pay a price. The question is whether Richard can hold on to it.-|-
Director Noël Fischer draws inspiration from a famous quote from the 1930s: “The old world is dying, and the new world struggles to be born: now is the time of monsters.” In a time of political tension and autocratic leaders, Shakespeare’s story feels disturbingly relevant. For this production, writer Peer Wittenbols created a contemporary adaptation that highlights both the seductive force and the danger of power.
