In Eindspel (Endgame), Samuel Beckett shows the senselessness of existence. With great humour, he shows how absurd our lives really are. Erik Whien directs an impressive cast in Eindspel: Hans Croiset (winner of the Louis d'Or), René van 't Hof (winner VSCD Mimeprijs), Cas Enklaar and Elsje de Wijn.

"Hans Croiset and René van 't Hof are phenomenal in this light, absurd direction of Samuel Beckett's Endgame" - ★★★★★ Volkskrant

Starting time: 7.30 p.m. / 3 p.m.
Location: Grote Zaal
Language: Dutch
Duration: 80 minutes, no intermission

'Nothing is funnier than the unfortunate.'

In Endgame, four characters are waiting for the end. But as so often in the works of Samuel Beckett, the question arises: what are they waiting for? What is the end, and will the end come? The characters in Endgame refuse to give up, even when everything around them is almost gone. They are in their hiding place and can't get out. The blind and crippled Hamm is dependent on his crippled servant Clov. Hamm's elderly parents, Nagg and Nell, live in a bin. As long as there is no end in sight, they carry on. They play their endgame.

With dry sidesteps and quick language games Beckett turns Endgame into a light-footed tragedy. Director Erik Whien's theatre revolves around people, their heads and everything that happens in them. He often puts his players on an empty stage and shows man overseeing the world. -|-The work of Samuel Beckett is a great source of inspiration for Whien. With his clear use of language and minimal setting he creates a world in which big questions of life come to light. How do you deal with finitude? Last year director Erik Whien made the successful performances Sea Wall and De Zaak Shell. Actor Emmanuel Ohene Boafo won the Louis d'Or for his role in Sea Wall and Jaap Spijkers the Arlecchino for his role in De Zaak Shell. His latest production Hebriana was his first 'big hall' performance at Het Nationale Theater.
