The sculpture of Albertus de Roos is the odd one out. De Roos was not a theatre maker or a theatre manager: from 1945 to 1962 he was the Amsterdam alderman for Education, the Arts and Public Works. He worked actively to strengthen cultural life in the city and to honour artists such as Herman Heijermans — who can also be found on the Gijsbrechtbordes — whose work could not be performed during the Second World War because he was Jewish.
