We believe in theatre as an encounter that crosses borders
An encounter between makers and audiences, between languages and between perspectives. Exchange, a plurality of voices and the bringing together of different views of the world form the core of our artistic ambition. In this way we bring the world to Amsterdam, and Amsterdam to the world.
Our productions travel the world
ITA performs not only at Amsterdam's Stadsschouwburg, but also on other Dutch stages and at festivals and in theatres worldwide.
From the Adelaide Festival to the Edinburgh International Festival and the Athens Epidaurus Festival: our productions can be seen at international festivals and in theatres in London, Shanghai and New York, among others.
And did you know that abroad we perform in Dutch with surtitles in the local language?

International remakes
International remakes are made of some ITA Productions. The production is then produced again with a local cast. Eline Arbo, for instance, adapted and directed The Years, after the novel by Annie Ernaux. The English-language version played in London's West End, drew more than 70,000 visitors in just over three months and won two Olivier Awards, including Best Director for Eline Arbo.
Oedipus, originally created at ITA by Robert Icke, also went on to a successful second life as an English-language production: after a sold-out, Olivier Award-winning West End run in London, the production travelled on to Broadway in New York. More than 150,000 people worldwide have now seen this original ITA Production.
The world comes to us as well
Our international DNA is firmly anchored. We invite leading directors from all over the world to create productions at ITA with our actors. And through the Ibsen Artist in Residence programme, internationally ambitious makers are given the room to developt at ITA.
The programming of Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam responds to ITA's international ambition with international theatre and dance productions that can often be seen nowhere else in the Netherlands. With Festival Brandhaarden we bring the urgent voices of international theatre into our building.
