In the heart of Amsterdam, Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam is one of the world's leading venues for contemporary theatre and dance. Since 1894, the iconic building on Leidseplein has brought together artists, theatre-makers, audiences, local communities and visitors from around the world.
Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam is a lively meeting place for makers, thinkers and audiences, and the home of ITA. It is where new productions are created and premiere, and where acclaimed productions return to the stage.
Our programme brings together local, national and international theatre and dance, established artists and new voices. It creates space for encounters between theatre, music theatre, dance, experimentation and dialogue. Each performance invites reflection and conversation about who we are, what moves us and how we relate to one another and to the world around us.
Every year, more than 300,000 people visit our building. They come for performances, post-show talks, guided tours, festivals, legendary parties or simply a good cup of coffee on our sunny terrace.

The Stadsschouwburg is an open house. Whether you're visiting for a performance or simply passing by, you're always welcome. It's a place for meeting, conversation and exchange.
At De Brasserie, you can enjoy coffee, lunch, dinner or drinks before and after a performance. On Leidseplein, you'll find The Bookshop: our soft pink space for reflection, encounter, experimentation and the unexpected.
Throughout the year, the Stadsschouwburg also becomes the beating heart of a range of festivals, including our own Brandhaarden and Lieve Stad, our collaboration with Julidans, and guest festivals such as Holland Festival and Nederlands Theater Festival.
