This portrait is remarkable in two ways. It was painted by Han van Meegeren, the master forger, of whom three further portraits hang in the theatre. And the person depicted, Annie van Ees, is thirty years old here and playing the character of Boefje, a boy from the stories of Mari J. Brusse, comparable to Kruimeltje and Pietje Bell. Annie van Ees would go on to play the part more than 1,500 times, including at the age of forty-five in the film in which Albert van Dalsum also appeared. Annie van Ees was married to the stage director Cor van der Lugt-Melsert; the portrait of his sister hangs beside hers.

Geschilderd portret ten voeten uit van een jonge figuur met kort donker haar in een wijd crèmekleurig hemd, donkere broek en blote voeten, de handen in de zakken, in een schemerig interieur. Rechts op de vloer ligt een konijn op een rode doek. Linksonder de signatuur H. van Meegeren 1923.
