Cristina Deutekom, born Stientje Engel, was honoured in 1995 with this portrait by Harry Knopperts, in recognition of her great services to opera. Deutekom became especially famous in Italy and sang with all the great stars, Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo among them. The forerunners of Dutch National Opera had this theatre as their home, so Christina Deutekom sang many an aria at the Leidseplein as well.
