The portrait of Cornelis Johannes Roobol was painted in 1862 by the Amsterdam painter Moritz Calisch. It shows an earnest theatre director who was associated with the (Stads)schouwburg for more than forty years. For much of the nineteenth century Dutch theatre was not especially artistic. Roobol was nevertheless valued as an actor, in his historical roles for instance.
