The theatre and Gijsbrecht van Amstel have been one for centuries. Joost van den Vondel tied the story of Gijsbrecht to the opening of the first Stadsschouwburg in 1637, and it has been part of the Amsterdam canon ever since. Antoon Molkenboer made this mosaic in 1953 to express that bond and to commemorate the liberation at the end of the Second World War. The mosaic shows details from the story: Gijsbrecht at the centre of the burning city, the choruses of angels who sing the tale, the stable as a reference to Christmas, the season in which the story is set, and the Amsterdam skyline right at the top. Molkenboer was no stranger to the theatre; he made sets and costumes for the Wagnervereeniging, among other work.

In de bovenhoeken de jaartallen 1637 en 1945, met het Amsterdamse wapen en de woorden Heldhaftig, Barmhartig, Vastberaden.
