This portrait is remarkable for several reasons. It was painted by J.W. Pieneman, who also portrayed Andries Snoek and Johanna Ziesenis-Wattier and is known for his Battle of Waterloo in the Rijksmuseum. He painted Jelgerhuis with a canvas and easel behind him, because Jelgerhuis was not only an actor but also an engraver, painter and costume designer. He was central to the transmission of classical acting technique, on which he wrote and taught. Marie Kleine-Gartman and Pierre August Morin, both commemorated in the theatre, were grandchildren of Jelgerhuis.
