The Kleine-Gartmanplantsoen on the Leidseplein, opposite De Balie and the City cinema, is named after the actor Maria Kleine-Gartman, granddaughter of the great actor Johannes Jelgerhuis. In the second half of the nineteenth century she was one of the theatre's foremost actors and did much to raise the standard of drama. She also taught at the new drama school, setting an example for the next generation. Maria Kleine-Gartman's name can be found on the front of the first balcony in the Main Auditorium (Grote Zaal), on what is known as a cartouche.
