In 1906 the Vereeniging tot oprichting en uitbreiding der Galerij van portretten commissioned Gerardus van Hove to paint a work for the portrait gallery. Gerardus van Hove was the brother of Bart van Hove, whose sculpture group can still be seen on the façade. The marble sculpture made by Joseph Teixeiro de Mattos has been part of the portrait gallery since 1900. Sophie de Vries was a nineteenth-century actor who spent many years with the major companies. She was the sister-in-law of Louis and Theo Bouwmeester, and the mother of the actor Sophie de Vries Jr.
