In 1934, before the actor's death, this portrait of Willem Hunsche was presented to the Stadsschouwburg in his honour. Simon Maris portrayed Willem Hunsche in his best-known role, that of Thomasvaer in De bruiloft van Kloris en Roosje. From the beginning of the eighteenth century, Buysero's play was added to the Gijsbrecht performances as a comic interlude. In it, Thomasvaer raises a toast to the new year and improvises on the year gone by, which makes the play a forerunner of today's New Year's Eve cabaret shows.
