In 1907 a committee commissioned a portrait of Willem Petrus de Leur to mark his fortieth anniversary as an actor. Pa de Leur is in fact best remembered as the first stage director in Dutch theatre. From 1879 to 1914 he directed for the Koninklijke Vereeniging het Nederlandsch Tooneel, including the first performance in the new theatre in 1894, with Louis and Theo Bouwmeester, Willem Royaards, Sophie van Biene and Kees Spoor — the father of Cornelis Spoor, who painted this portrait.
