A familiar name back on the façade

From 22 September the name Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam returns to Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam. ITA simply remains ITA, the organisation and the theatre company that produces, presents and programms there, but from 22 September the façade of the monumental building on Leidseplein will read ‘Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam’.

It was a wish that many of our visitors, Amsterdammers and theatre companies that play here never stopped voicing. At the same time I am proud that we can say that we, ITA, may call the historic Stadsschouwburg our house. And that we may welcome so many people in this house and make them feel at home."

Over the past year we spoke to regular visitors, neighbours, theatre companies and people on the street about their connection with the building. Wonderful stories came to the surface, about memorable encounters, striking performances, about wandering through the historic building, about feeling at home. But there was criticism too: the name Internationaal Theater Amsterdam turned out to be confusing for a building that has been known as Amsterdam's Stadsschouwburg since 1894.

So from now on
From September the names are simple: Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam is the building, the familiar place for theatre and dance, with the finest shows from the Netherlands and abroad. ITA is and remains the organisation and the theatre company that performs there, that makes all its new productions in this building and that tours in the Netherlands and around the world. ITA curators and programmers make sure the Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam continues to have the most urgent, emerging and beautiful shows and performances.
