Eelco Smits
Eelco Smits (1977) was a member of Toneelgroep Amsterdam, the predecessor of ITA, from 2005 to 2019, and a member of the ITA Ensemble from 2023 to 2025.
In the 2026/27 season he appears at ITA in the revivals of Angels in America and The Architect.
Smits received the Paul Steenbergenpenning in 2018. In 2023 he won the Louis d’Or for his role in Geschiedenis van Geweld at Toneelschuur Producties and Toneelgroep Oostpool.

As a member of the ensemble, Smits has appeared in The Laws, Angels in America, Primeval and Other Times, Kings of war, A Little Life, The Things That Pass, May We Be Forgiven (Louis d'Or nomination), Song from Far Away (the theatre monologue Simon Stephens wrote especially for Smits), Roman tragedies, The Glass Menagerie (Arlecchino nomination), Angels in America, Antonioni Project, Teorema, Summer Trilogy, Spoken, Phaedra, Tartuffe, The Miser, The Seagul, Mourning Becomes Electra, de Russen!, Nora, Hamlet vs Hamlet, Liliom, Opening Night, Maria Stuart, The Taming of the Shrew, Macbeth, Rocco and His Brothers, Britannicus, Oresteia, Perfect wedding, Madame de Sade, Keetje van heilbron and Oom Wanja.
Before joining the ensemble, Eelco Smits was a company member of the Ro Theater, where he appeared in Leonce en Lena and Portia Coughlan, among other productions, and played the young Marcel Proust in the monumental theatre cycle Op zoek naar de verloren tijd. In 2010 he played Prince Friso in the feature film Majesteit: De droom van Beatrix. From 2012 to 2014 Smits appeared on television in the series Bloedverwanten, and he has also appeared in Jeuk, Vechtershart, Van God los and Lijn 32, among others.
