Where Roman Tragedies revolved around political systems, Kings of War focused on the people at the helm. The production showed how leaders deal with war, ambition, doubt and the abuse of power, and in doing so made a direct connection with current affairs.
 

With Kings of War, Ivo van Hove showed how topical Shakespeare can be. The production placed political leaders in the middle of a recognisable world of media, power and crisis management. Hans Kesting's portrayal of Richard III in particular made a huge impression and became one of the most acclaimed roles in Toneelgroep Amsterdam's repertoire. The production then travelled to international theatres and festivals and built on the worldwide success of Roman Tragedies.
