At the centre is Mary Jane, a single mother caring for her seriously ill young son. Her days revolve around medical equipment, routines and uncertainty, but also around a determined love that keeps her going.

Mary Jane follows a mother fully devoted to caring for her child. In a world focused on survival, space slowly opens up for connection and support. Women around her, each with their own background and beliefs, form a network where care is shared and humanity takes centre stage.
The performance shows how vulnerability and strength can exist side by side. How people find each other in difficult circumstances, and how small acts of compassion can make a world of difference. Based on the personal experiences of Amy Herzog, Mary Jane is an intimate and layered portrait of parenthood, illness and hope that both confronts and comforts.
About Erik Whien
Director Erik Whien is known for his clear, psychological stagings in which he brings actors to remarkable heights. Since 2016, he has been part of the makers’ ensemble of Theater Rotterdam. His work has been selected multiple times for the Dutch Theatre Festival.
